DUNEDIN CITY

Consider incorporating these options into your tour

The Octagon – the heart of Dunedin – see St Paul’s Cathedral, built during WW1, as well as the Art Gallery, hosting one of the best art collections in Australasia – travel down Stuart Street to see the historic stone buildings of Dunedin’s Courthouse and Dunedin’s Railway Station opened in 1906.

Did you know – Dunedin was in the late 1800’s making a very good whisky, however the New Zealand government wanted a loan to complete its Railway program and this loan came from Scotland on the condition that whisky was not to be distilled in New Zealand? Whisky distilling in New Zealand was discontinued until the 1980’s when Wilson’s in Dunedin again distilled & exported whisky. However today this operation has ceased in Dunedin with this historic building converted into accommodation. Otago Settlers Museum – telling the unique story of the people of Otago and Dunedin from early last century to the present is a must for visitors seeking the history of the region. Visit the Centennial Memorial - Commemorating 100 years of British rule – 1840 to 1940. The two bronze figures represent the past (a closed book) and the future (unwinding to the present and the future).

A must for rugby fans - Carisbrook “The Brook” – Also known as the -‘The House of Pain’ This land was set aside as a reserve in 1848, becoming a sports area in 1880, now one of the world’s famous sporting venues for both cricket and rugby.

Ask your Driver to incorporate the ‘Town Belt’, part of 500 acres set aside by the pioneers of Otago as reserved bush area into your tour. Marvel at Otago Girls High School – a beautiful stone building, situated in View St and the oldest Girls High School in the Southern Hemisphere. Otago Boys High School – again a magnificent building and the oldest high school in Otago, founded in 1863.

View Otago Harbour – Did you know - Many years before the first European saw NZ, the waterway, which we know as Otago Harbour, was the playground of the whale and the fishing ground of the Maori. Their canoes were the only vessels that passed over its waters and they were numerous in the early days. When the Matilda anchored in the Otago Harbour in 1813, the ship’s gear was in bad shape and the crew ill. The ship remained in harbour for 11 days and the Maori kindly fed the sick men and assisted in repairing the faulty rigging. The “Matilda” must hold the honor of being the first ship to sail in this seaway. Look out over the beaches of St Kilda and St Clair; both are favourites for swimming and surfing in the summer months.

Travel around Prospect Park looking down on Woodhaugh Gardens in the foreground and beyond (to the right) the Botanical Gardens - set out in 65 acres dating back to 1869.

Take time to wander through the campus of University of Otago. Did you know - The Reverend Thomas Burns, and his successor the Reverend Dr Stuart had a strong influence in Dunedin and it is not surprising that in 1869 the Provincial Government passed ordinance, founding ‘The University of Otago’ the first University in New Zealand. While you are in this area don’t forget to visit Baldwin Street - Steepest Street in the World - walk it, run it, visit it, cycle it, survive it!

OTAGO PENINSULA

A showcase of marine wildlife, Dunedin is well known for the peninsula attractions but drivers have commented that for the time it takes to get down to the Peninsular, visiting just one attraction may be a waste, you need to take in at least 2 or 3! This is where Natures Wonders, Albatross Colony, Penguin Place, Monarch Wildlife Cruise, Larnach’s Castle are situated. Enjoy the experience of meeting the Peninsula’s locals – the yellow eyed and little blue penguins, seals and shags in their natural environment. So if you are interested in wildlife this is the area to go – but you would probably need more time to incorporate all the wonders in your tour – like a whole day!
